Philippe Hiquily

And we saved the best for last! This Paris interior belongs to Marco Scarani and Jamie Creel. It features the Philippe Hiquily chair in gilt bronze on an aluminum base.  Just behind it, a stunning bronze sculpture lamp by Emile Gilioli (1911-1977) is perched atop a Hiquily patinated bronze console with a purple lucite top! What a masterful composition. These Gilioli lamps are very hard to come by but we have found one in Paris! It is signed and numbered as are the Hiquily tables and chairs.

And Hiquily’s pair of gilded bronze guéridons with petrified wood tops are the epitome of understated glamour. They were created in an edition of 12, each stamped and numbered. There are some still available in Paris.

We are noticing Hiquily designs in the chicest interiors! This installation photo taken by Vincent Leroux for AD France (sept/oct 2010) of Lenny Kravitz’s Paris hôtel particulier features a pair of Hiquily aluminum tables. Their reflective surfaces aide in drawing ones eye out to the edges of this gracious space. We spotted this beautiful Philippe Hiquily guéridon while in Dior on Place Vendôme last week. Click on the photo for a better view of this beautiful showroom.

This is the image that started our obsession. Philippe Hiquily is a French sculptor who draws inspiration from the female form. His work is overtly sexual and we find his furniture extremely sensual. He started designing furniture in 1960 about 20 years after he began his professional career.  The voluptuous curves of this dining table (c. 1968) harmonize with classical interiors while his use of hammered bronze, and aluminum adds gravitas to modern interiors. The tinted glass contributes a touch of whimsy and all together this design speaks of luxury, sultriness, ruggedness, abundance and playfulness.
It is a unique piece and was last sold at Christie’s Paris in 2010. Click on the image for lot details.
